Born in 1940, one of eight children, Maxine Hong Kingston is the daughter of Chinese immigrants to America. Her father, a scholar in China, ran a laundry business and a gambling house in California; her mother, a doctor in China, helped with the laundry and worked in the fields. Maxine won scholarships to the University of California at Berkeley, where she returned to teach as Senior Lecturer in the Department of English. But alongside her academic life, she had embarked on a career as a writer, and her extraordinary books have become key texts in the American canon. In many ways this memoir recalls her first major work, The Woman Warrior, in which she blended Chinese myth with fiction and autobiography to reflect on her mother's past life in China and the experience of immigrants to America. In I Love a Broad Margin to My Life, she writes from the point of view of being 65, looking back on a rich and complex life of literature and political activism, always against the background of what it is like to have a mixed Chinese-American identity. Passages of autobiography, in which she describes such events in her life as being imprisoned with Alice Walker for demonstrating against the Iraq war, meld with a fictional journey in which she sends her avatar Wittman Ah Sing on a trip to modern China. She also evokes her own poignant journey, without a guide, back to the villages of her father and mother. Beautifully written, endlessly thought-provoking, this is an important book from one of the major writers of her generation. 1. Language: English. Narrator: Maxine Hong Kingston. One of two sons, Ward was born in Los Angeles, California, to Irish immigrants Hugh and Mary Ward. He entered St. John's Seminary in 1940, and was ordained to the priesthood by Archbishop John Cantwell on May 4, 1946. From 1949 to 1952, he studied at the Catholic University of America in Washington, D.C., from where he earned a licentiate in canon law. On October 16, 1963, he was appointed Auxiliary Bishop of Los Angeles and Titular Bishop of Bria by Pope Paul VI. He received his episcopal consecration on the following December 12 from James Cardinal McIntyre, with Archbishop Joseph McGucken and Bishop Alden Bell serving as co-consecrators

Horton Foote, a little-known 20th-century American playwright, has received much recent acclaim, particularly for such screenplays as The Trip to Bountiful and Tender Mercies . This study scrutinizes all available Foote work, from the early one-acts of the 1940's through the latest plays of the 1980's. The single theme of family reconciliation that runs throughout his canon is highlighted.

Carson McCullers in the Twenty-First Century

The contributors to this volume use diverse critical techniques to identify how Carson McCullers’ writing engages with and critiques modern social structures and how her work resonates with a twenty-first century audience. The collection includes chapters about McCullers’ fiction, autobiographical writing, and dramatic works, and is groundbreaking because it includes the first detailed scholarly examination of new archival material donated to Columbus State University after the 2013 death of Dr. Mary Mercer, McCullers’ psychiatrist and friend, including transcripts of the psychiatric sessions that took place between McCullers and Mercer in 1958. Further, the collection covers the scope of McCullers’ canon of work, such as The Heart Is a Lonely Hunter (1940), The Member of the Wedding (1946), and Ballad of the Sad Café (1943), through lenses that are of growing interest in contemporary literary studies, including comparative transatlantic readings, queer theory, disability studies, and critical animal theory, among others.
